WINGS OVER WINSTON

This is the STEAM Academy building on South Liberty Street in Winston-Salem, NC. This building was demolished in January 2018 to make way for a bridge to take Liberty Street over the Salem Parkway (Business I-40). Opened in 1997 as the Downtown Middle School, this charter school changed its name to the STEAM Academy in 2011 to tout its focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math in an attempt to combat declining enrollment. Unfortunately, the re-branding effort was unfruitful and the STEAM Academy closed its doors for the final time on June 30, 2013.
